Cleft lip/cleft palate are congenial conditions.
CLEFT LIP
- It is a defect in upper lip and can extend into the nose.
- 3 in 10 cases are associated with underlying syndrome.
- Complaints - Difficulty in swallowing and speech.
- Treatment of cleft lip needs surgical correction which leaves very minimal scar.
CLEFT PALATE
- In this defect occurs in the hard or soft palate at the roof of the mouth.
- It is an opening between the mouth and nasal cavity.
- Difficulty in feeding,swallowing and speech- affects psycho-social implications affecting,bonding between mother and child.
- These children are more prone to hearing problems, ear infections, glue ear.
Needs surgical correction and usually done at 6 months-12 months.
