Is your baby not taking feeds

BABY NOT TAKING FEEDS? KNOW THE REASONS

Bond between mother and child is mostly formed during breast feeds. But sometimes baby cries while feeding and refuse to take feeds.

The reasons for babies refusing feeds include

• Any infection like cold or ear discharge causes baby disturbed and irritated resulting in refusing feed.
• Change in aromas of the mother by using new perfume etc cause baby to get distracted and refuse feeds.
• If baby has acid reflux then breast feeding is painful which results in refusing feeds.
• If breast milk is produced in large quantities, babies cant swallow quickly resulting in refusing feeds.
• If baby is in the teething phase , the process of sucking is painful resulting in refusing feeds.
• If baby has infection or wound in the mouth baby refuses to take feeds.
• If baby had taken vaccination, they wont be in a state of mind to take feeds.
• At times when mother has taken any food or medicines that causes allergy then baby refuses to take feed.
• If baby has been separated from mother for a long time then baby might refuse to take feeds.
• Sometimes babies bite while sucking milk, if mother reacts strongly then babies get scared and don’t take milk.
• If there is change in routine then baby might refuse to take feed.
• Mother might be over reactive when baby coughs or gags and refuse to take feeds. It is quite normal and not to be worried.
• If the baby is crying then baby might be facing difficulty of not burping on his own.
• Babies might get distracted by environment or surroundings and refuse to take feeds.
• If mother is worried or stressed then babies may also get stressed and refuse to take feeds.
• Sometimes due to inadequate sleep baby becomes irritated and wont take feeds.
• If baby is not hungry and baby had his full then babies refuse to take feeds.
• When babies nose is blocked due to cold or incorrect feeding posture ,they may refuse to feed and start crying.
• To Calm Baby
• Take baby outside for a park etc, so that baby feels better.
• Feed your baby in calm,cool and dim place when baby is about to fall asleep.
• If baby refuse to feed, leave the baby, forcing to drink milk causes more irritation.
• Treat the infections like nose blockage or ear discharge.
• Try feeding baby in different positions that involves movements.
• Soothing and calming baby.
