What is Gastritis-Why there be acidity

GASTRITIS

Gastritis is an inflammation or irritation of the stomach wall lining causing pain in the epigastric region

Causes of gastritis include-

Helicobacter pyloriinfection,smoking,alcohol,stress,prolonged use of pain killers,gastro esophageal reflux disease,food substances like coffee,tea,pepper,ingestion of corrosive substances,reflux of bile and infections caused by bacteria and viruses,autoimmune disorder

Gastritis occurs when destructive mechanisms dominate over protective mechanism

Symptoms include burning sensation in the epigastric region,reducedappetite,indigestion,belching,bloating,hiccups,nausea and vomiting,rarely fullness of abdomen after intake of food.Haemetemesis may also occurs in case of severe gastritis

INVESTIGATIONS

Complete blood picture to rule out anaemia

Upper GI endoscopy-It is a procedure done by medical gastroenterologist in which a endoscope is passed from the mouth into the stomach and inspected for inflammation and if required tissue is sent for biopsy

Faecal occult blood test

TREATMENT OF GASTRITIS

It includes acid prevention and protection of gastric mucosa

Most commonly used drugs are proton pump inhibitors -pantoprazole,omeprazole,esmoprazole.

H2 blockers-These medications neutralize acid in stomach

Treatment of Hpylori infections with triple regimen(clarithromycin,metronidazole and PPI)

Avoid using NSAIDS,tea,coffee,alcohol,smoking

Surgical procedures are usually required for GERD when medical management fails
