Stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is cutoff i.e, oxygen is cutoff and the corresponding body part loses its function. It occurs because of blockage of artery to the particular part of brain.
There are three type of stroke
- Ischemic stroke because of thrombosis or clotting.
- Hemorrhagic stroke because of bleeding.
- Transient Ischemic attack
80% of the stroke constitute Ischemic stroke

- Once the stroke is identified patient should be taken to the hospital, preferably where 24 hours CT scan is available.
- Other investigations include MRI brain, carotid angiogram , echo cardiogram.
TREATMENT
In Ischemic stroke, thrombolysis is done and it should be done usually within 4 and half hours.
In Hemorrhagicstroke treatment includes reducing BP and if bleeding is more surgical management is needed.
Interventional management is usually done to remove clots and where thrombolysis is not successful.
